Is Bluetooth not working on your Mac with High Sierra? Here are some things you can try, from simple to (fairly) complex…
Bluetooth isn’t the most stable technology around. It’s liable to disconnect randomly, can be easily interrupted by solid objects, and is supported by hundreds of devices with don’t always talk to one another. On top of all these (potential) issues, macOS High Sierra has its problems with Bluetooth technology. If you’ve encountered any problems with Bluetooth recently, then here are the most common fixes, from easiest to most complicated:
Easy fix 1: Check the battery levels of your Bluetooth devices.
If they’re running low, then you might be encountering intermittent connection problems. You can do this by clicking on the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar, then selecting your devices.
Easy fix 2: Check for Software Updates
Make sure you’re running the latest version of macOS. You can look for updates by opening the App Store, then clicking the Updates tab.
Easy fix 3: Disable Handoff
Handoff is a really clever feature which lets you start one thing on your iPhone or iPad (such as reading a web page), then continue it on your Mac. However, some people have found that it causes issues with their Bluetooth device. To disable Handoff:
- Open the System Preferences app, then click General.
- Uncheck Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.
Easy fix 4: Unpair your Bluetooth devices, then reconnect them.
You can do this via the System Preferences > Bluetooth. To disconnect a device, hover the cursor over the Bluetooth device, then click the small X which appears. To reconnect, wait for the device to appear at the top of the Bluetooth panel, select it then choose Connect.
Not so easy fix 1: Reset the Bluetooth module
Restarting the Bluetooth module on your Mac is a good way to fix potential problems, and it’s fairly easy to do. First, make sure the Bluetooth icon is visible in the menu bar. If it is not, open System Preferences, click on Bluetooth, then tick Show Bluetooth in menu bar at the bottom of the dialog.
Next, hold down the Shift and Option keys on your keyboard and click on the Bluetooth icon in your Mac’s menu bar. Select Debug > Reset the Bluetooth module, and it will reset in the background.
Not so easy fix 2: Delete your Bluetooth Preferences.
You can try manually deleting the Bluetooth preferences saved for your device. To do this:
Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences (you can use the Command+Shift+G keyboard shortcut in the Finder to open the Go To window)
Delete any preference files associated with Bluetooth. Here are the most common files:
You can use the Search field to find any Bluetooth preferences. Once you have found them drag them to the Trash to delete them.
If none of the above works…
